nerosunero at The Complex by LE COOL- Dublin (review)

exhibition
nerosunero - Couple
The Complex, Block C, Units 18-21, Smithfield Square, Dublin 7.

Ah, the Italians! Great lovers, accomplished artists, passionate purveyors of all of life's juiciest fruits. It helps to have good hands, I suppose. Mario Sughi (aka nerosunero) has a fine eye and a steady hand and I've liked his vector-illustrations since he did a summer cover for le cool way back in the single digit issues. You know he's Italian by looking at his works. There are girls. Lots of girls. Girls in panties. Girls running on the beach. Half naked girls in laundrettes. It's more abstract than lewd though, and in this exhibition there is subtlety at play. It's a study of those moments couples share and it's the viewer, not the artist, who is the voyeur. Mario may have pedigree through his father Alberto - one of the greatest Italian artists of his generation - but his talent is clearly illustrated on these walls. / Vernon Steel

Super Alphabet... collected!

I finally finished all of the Super Alphabet. Now it is available as a T-Shirt on both "Zazzle" and "RedBubble" websites! There is also the first poster version available on "ImageKind" website. All of these versions have no background art to mess with the viewing of the letters but the next version of the poster and T-shirts will have full color backgrounds. I'm also working on backgrounds for each individual letter for the book version. Help out a fellow artist and leave comments on a site that you visit. Thank you in advance.

I Loke You

Reggie and Mary were smitten with one another. They were inseparable. The two often took long strolls when the day was at it’s end. It was on one of these occasions that Reggie blurted it out; those three little words that coincide with sweaty palms. Except, they weren’t the three words he had meant to say. Or were they? In any case, Mary (with not one ounce of hesitation) reciprocated, “I loke you, too!”

I made Marvel superhero profiles

Bldawley_marvelpromo2011

Here is the second part of my self promotion piece (first part HERE). This time using Marvel Comics characters (Captain Marvel, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye). I realize that Monica Rambeau is Photon, but she'll always be my favorite Captain Marvel from the '80s. So, deal with it.

I wish I was able to get this posted sooner. I have a 30 hour per week job that keeps me from creating as much as I used to. Hopefully, I can get into a groove again with these, because I would like to make more themed versions like this. Although, expand out of comics and maybe something from classic books or television. Stay tuned.

Editorial Illustration On Narcissism For Utne Reader Magazine

These were several editorial illustrations created for the May/June issue of UTNE Reader. They were done for a bunch of stories that revolved around the topic of narcissism.

Half page, opener for "The Culture of Narcissism" - playing off the idea of thinking you are the center of the universe.

"The Narcissism Myth" - this one revolves around the subject of young people and their need for outside validation (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc.) being rooted in their own insecurity.

"Just Do It" - the focus on this discussion was about self-improvement, self-help books, obsession with being the best we can be, and the power of positive thinking. More or less poking fun at this stuff.

"Whatever Happened to Empathy" - explored how much we've lost our ability to empathize with others, walk in other people's shoes, etc.

"Narcissus Regards a Book" - People want to read about themselves and what they're into, not great literature.

I don't usually enter contests. But I really want an ipad2, so I am willing to give it the ol' try. And DA is having a contest with StarBucks as a sponsor. Blended Remix. It feels really good to be illustrating something for fun again. I think I may start entering more contests. If nothing else, it is just practice.

The Hero's Call

This is a piece I just finished as a favor to an old co-worker. He gathered a bunch of artists together to do a black and white piece for a sketchbook that will be available to buy during this year's Comic-Con. Proceeds from the sketchbook will be donated to a charity to benefit autism.

Super Advertising!

Hey everyone! Here's part of a recent job I did for an advertising client. When I was growing up there was nothing I wanted more than to be a comic book artist. Even though I eventually did some work at the edge of mainstream comics for one of the big companies my interests went in another direction. So it's fun to get to do this comic-style stuff now and then for advertising and magazine clients. There's a male counterpart to this character and a super-villain in the works as well.

nerosunero at The Complex (Dublin, 23-30 June 2011)

COUPLE
Mario Sughi aka nerosunero unveils his new series of works at
The Complex Gallery

Opening Reception: 23rd June 2011, 6.00 – 8.00 pm.

Dublin-based Italian artist and illustrator, Mario Sughi aka nerosunero, will exhibit his series of new works in a solo exhibition: Couple at The Complex Gallery. This exhibition will run from Thursday, 23rd June until Thursday 30th June 2011.

Nerosunero's pieces depict characters in scenes of contemporary living. His graphic bold works, rich in narrative detail, unexpectedly convert the viewer to voyeur. Upon first glance the subjects appear in unremarkable routine situations, however upon further inspection, the compositions reveal snapshots of intimate encounters and moments of invaded privacy. These scenes are encapsulated in vivid, arresting colour.

The artist marries delicate linear illustrative technique, with a vibrant saturated pallet; creating an effective juxtaposition. The style and vibrancy of the works helps lure the spectator into the image, encouraging survey and helping to uncover the dark undertones.

Of his work, the artist states: "I would like to think that my work has been inspired by the playful novels of Milan Kundera, and the work of two very imaginative figurative painters: Francis Bacon and David Hockney. But possibly this is not the case, only a playful trick of my imagination."

The multi award winning Mario Sughi aka nerosunero is a member of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland (IGI) and the Associazione Illustratori Italiani (AII). His work, satirical in humour and minimalist in style, has been published and presented in international catalogues, magazines, art websites and galleries.

The Complex Gallery is delighted to welcome nerosunero with COUPLE.

Venice Biennale at Italian Institute of Culture, Dublin

The Italian Pavilion in the World’ – 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale
10 June – 26 August 2011

Opening: Thursday 9th June 2011, 7pm

In the context of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, the Italian Pavilion at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2011 features this year a significant new development in extending for the first time beyond national boundaries to involve the entire network of Italian Institutes of Culture. Thanks to a joint initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate General for the Promotion of the Country System, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities on a project of Vittorio Sgarbi, the works of Italian artists active in foreign countries will be exhibited in the 89 Institutes located around the world. Through multimedia installations the 89 exhibitions will come together within the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenal, offering unprecedented visibility to 217 artists as well as to the Italian Institutes of Culture themselves.

The exhibition at the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin represents Ireland as one of eighty-nine satellite exhibitions featured in The Italian Pavilion in the World at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. We are very pleased and proud to be part of this project and to present: Cecilia Bullo, Vittoria Colonna, Elena Gallotta, Paolo Scalera and Mario Sughi aka Nerosunero, the Italian artists active in Ireland selected by the committee chaired by Vittorio Sgarbi.

A video on the Dublin exhibition, on show at the Italian Pavilion in Venice, will offer unprecedented visibility to Ireland and to the artists.
