Super Bowl

I'm not a big sports fan these days. So much of it just turns me cold. I still like to see a good game from time to time but I don't go out of my way for it. Here's an old (12 years old) illustration I did for a magazine that has a football theme to it. I don't have some of the other football illustrations scanned into the computer for some odd reason. Perhaps some day when I have way too much extra time on my hands and not enough stuff to do. Enjoy Superbowl Sunday!!

Puppy Love

Another Halloween costume that didn't make it.

Do to some unexpected side-effects, the wildly popular "Pit Bull with Lipstick" costume, was recalled after just one Halloween season.

BSG's Starbuck

Been a while since I posted here! This is my take on my favorite character on Battlestar Galactica —the delightfully cranky cigar-chomping Ms. Kara Thrace.

Cooking

I'm in the midst of doing a tv commercial. Finally I could do a bit of drawing on the set. The first thing that caught my eye was this dude. After I showed my sketch to him, we started chatting. He has an unusual last name and the only other person I could think of with it is Anthony Zimmern. He told that Andrew was his cousin. He's the guy on the food network who eats all of the bizarre foods. My friend Drew and I said he must have been the kind of kid who always took dares. He said yes. Once when they were little kids he said they asked Anthony to jump across a glass coffee table. Of course he missed and cracked his head open. He also said he was very smart as a little kid too.

I'm Finally a Comic Artist!

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I am more than pleased to announce that I am finally a comic artist! Writer Stephen Lindsay (creator of Jesus Hates Zombies) liked my drawing so much that he asked me to illustrate his newest project, "Stanton Street Saints / Almighty Warlords"! Above is a sample - page one from the book currently in production. Art by me, written and lettered by Stephen Lindsay. To see it bigger and better, click on the image. Just a heads-up though as it does contain coarse language. Hope y'all digs!

Meet the Don

Another doodle! I'd been having terrible dreams about a particular part of my early adult life back in Detroit and when I worked for Chrysler Corporation. The last 2.5 years I worked there my boss was this guy named Gino. Gino was with the Mafia. He ran the off track betting at that factory. He had a very cushy job and mostly just walked around collecting monies from the guys that placed bets with him. He had a thug named Frank. He was the muscle. When someone didn't pay, Frank collected. He was brutal! I saw him destroy guys behind metal presses several times. They had me use a fork lift to move in and out, metal tubs of small metal parts when a section line in the plant needed them. Other than that, I just kicked back all day. Gino found out that I could draw because I was doing some political cartoons one day. He said, "Mitch, (I kept telling him my name was Mike.) I want you to draw cartoons of the opposing union party so we can get our boys in and make changes." Who was I to turn down the Mafia. He fed me ideas on a daily basis and I was cranking out cartoons. By the end of each day they were all over the factory. At one point the opposition started calling me and threatening me and my mother, who I lived with at the time. She was terrified and asked me what the hell was going on. I told her not to worry. I reported this to Gino and he said, " Don't worry Mitch, I'll take care of it because I think I know who is responsible." I was never threatened again after that. The Mafia took care of me and I did my best to continue cranking out cartoons for them. Gino's people took over that Union in the election. It was a landslide because of the cartoons I put out.
It's weird to think that I was involved in something like that, so long ago.

Lost And Found

In high school, my best friend was Timmy Valcante. Somewhere along the way in life I lost touch with him. He never left my mind though. i would think about him all the time. Recently I have reunited with my beautiful cousin Eileen. She was someone else I lost also. Turns out Eileen married a guy from my high school who stayed in touch with a guy who still knew the whereabouts of my friend Timmy. I got the guy's number and started out to track down Valcante's number. The problem was, the guy who had the number was never home. I called day and night. I'd try at odd hours but nothing worked. I was relentless. Finally one night Danny answered his phone, it had taken two months. Although we didn't know each other that well in high school, he remembered me. He did indeed have my friend Timmy's number. Dan and I spent an hour telling stories and cracking each other up. Finally I had my old friend's number in my hand. It was amazing and scary. I waited a few days before I called. It's never easy calling someone out of the blue. I cracked open a cold Red Stripe beer and dialed the number. His daughter answered and I told her I was an old pal of her dad. He came on the line and a great reunion began. It took a minute or two and then the stories flowed like a Sam Kinison concert. It was an incredible and healing experience for both of us. I had always been thinking and worrying about what happened to him and he was doing the same. We filled each other in on what happened to us. He married an old friend of mine from high school. Dolores. I was thrilled two great people who I dug so much found each other. Now we are back in each others life. Hopefully for good. I felt a whole lot better about the world waking up this morning.

Where IS MY MEMORY?

Jeez,

Very Distracting. Sorta like this thing was, when I was growing up.

2009

I'm off to a rocky start drawing this year. I was posting at a clip of three times a week for over three years now, maybe more. this is the first time I've been so overwhelmed at work that it has cut into my drawing. I do anticipate breaking out of this little slump. SO please don't worry about not enough posts happening here. This is some new drawings from my little subway drawings book I keep in my winter coat.
