In The Works

Here's a sketch for one of the projects that I've been working on this week. It is for what I call an "illustrative logo", meaning that it is basically a full on illustration that will have type around it, etc. that the company will use for their logo. I do not have to do the type design (thank God) so that's why it's all "naked" and funny shaped. The client liked the look of some clip art that they had found but they wanted to use an original design so my job is to do just that. Kinda fun. Who doesn't like to draw lions? Right now it's just a preliminary sketch and may or may not still need some changes before it goes to color. I'm awaiting client feedback on it right now.

As for my new website, it was supposed to launch last week but we found a glitch that needed some fixing before it goes live. Ah well, these things happen and it should be up soon. I'll keep y'all posted. Oooh, the anticipation!

Card Broad

How is cardboard made? Paper and cardboard are mostly made from a fiber called cellulose that comes from trees harvested from plantations and forests.Wood chips are mechanically and/or chemically treated to release the fibers. This produces a pulp which is then mixed with large amounts of water to make a slurry (mush) that is passed over a continuous, rapidly moving mesh. The water is drawn through the mesh, leaving the fibers behind. This damp paper is then passed over a series of rollers to flatten and dry it, then rolled onto huge spools, and sent to factories for cutting and shaping. Each time paper is recycled the fibers shorten and lose strength, so new fibers have to be added. Some paper and cardboard are made from other fibers such as cotton or hemp. I plageurized this from online somewhere. I am really into drawing on cardboard at the moment.

Honest Expression

So I decided to pull out the charcoal and acrylics today. It’s something I haven’t done in a long time. I opened up my sketchbook and went at it. Making good decisions is what I need to do more of from day to day. I plan to do 2 more of these self portraits. They’ll connect vertically this is the first one and the bottom of the layer.

And just wanted to say hello to the fellow sugar goodness peoples. This is my first post and hope to have many more.

Bird Of Prey

I never praise my own work but when I drew this even I was impressed. It seemed to come out of nowhere. I love how I did the colors of the pigeon. The purple especially. It really looks like a god damn pigeon. Good job Tommy Kane.

SFG: Bad Ideas

As is often the case, I woke up with the strangest image in my head... turkeys.

Despondent turkeys to be exact.

I know, it's not even November and I'm already concerned about the mental health of turkeys.

Well, truth be told, this week's challenge, "Bad Ideas" brought to mind the urban myth about turkeys being so dumb, they look up in the sky when it rains, and thereby drown. A story obviously perpetrated by the turkeys themselves to gain sympathy around Thanksgiving.

A little digging around online revealed the fact that turkeys do not have binocular vision (i.e., the ability to focus both eyes on the same object). A turkey’s eyes point sideways, so looking up into they sky to check the weather; not likely to happen.

Hopefully this news will curtail any future turkey suicide attempts, which, of course, would be a bad idea.

Keister bunny

I was asked by my local SPCA to provide an illustration for their magazine, for an article on deciding whether or not a rabbit is the right pet for you. The story is about a woman who adopts a bunny that likes to lie under her furniture, and one night the bunny's head pops out from the middle of the couch—it had been slowly chewing through from the bottom up...

Deckmate

I started watching this Naval epic on AMC this weekend.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060934/awards
The film was an Oscar nominee in a handful of categories back in 66'. But, best by far was the fact that Steve McQueen was in it, and Mako too. It was a good deal all around in my opinion. So, I settled in to start the film at 3 am Sunday morning and was well into it. But, after about two hours I got worried, I hadn't seen any plot resolution and new characters where being still introduced..at 5.15 am..Gulp.

Upon further inspection this film is like 4 hours or more in length. that means I'd have to stay up for another two hours to finish it. But, I was exhausted at this point from a lack of sleep the night before. I resolved to netflix it later, shut off the film (have to watch less tube), and go to bed. Which is what I did, only to wake the next morning and realize I could have digitally recorded the other two hours when I went to bed......I am a dope.

But that aside here is a drawing of a sailor. I did while watching the goodness.

Digitally remastered

I've rescanned my moleskine sketchbooks (well number 3-8) you can flip through them at www.mattiasadolfsson.se/sketchbook/sketchbook to turn page click the right side of the page (flip back click on the left side). Happy flipping!

Creatures of Habit

Here is a painting entitled "Teasing Death" for a solo show that I am having in San Jose, CA at Riga's European Bakery and Cafe. I have 13 pieces in the show and they are acrylics painted on canvas. If you are in the area try to check it out. The info is posted on my web site: cbillustration.squarespace.com

Multiple

I did this drawing for the Illustration Friday theme this week, which is "Multiple."

In light of this theme, I think most folks would agree that the ability to multitask is pretty much manditory these days. Other than wearing roller-skates all day long or having your self cloned, eight arms might come in very handy.

Perhaps with these extra appendages or tentacles (for the pedantic,) you could, while designing that logo for your client, also wash the dishes, balance your checkbook and make yourself some lunch. You might even consider picking up a some dumbbells with your suckers and work those flabby biceps.

While your at it, you really have to watch this. Make sure to watch it to the end, because that's where you will see how amazing octopus really are.

Maharishi

The Maharishi Yogi died recently. You will remember he is the dude who the Beatles hung out with. Behind Murray the K, Brian Epstein and Billy Preston, he was like the tenth Beatle or something. Anyway we are sorry to see him go (most of us thought he was already gone). He does make for a great drawing on cardboard.

My Official Art Process...

Because absolutely no one demanded it, in this post, I am giving you a sneak peek into my artistic process, or lack thereof.

Inspiration hits me from just about anywhere, but typically it comes to me while I am no where near a pencil or piece of paper.

Thankfully for modern technology, I can just whip out my cell and take a picture of whatever tickles my imagination. And then sketch my idea later.

However for this piece, I did not have that luxury. My wife and I were traveling in a car when I spotted a really cool statue in front a public library.

So when I finally got home, I jumped on the net and luckily found a picture of it. I quickly sketched out my idea.

Then I gathered some reference images for the finer details of the illustration.

I also decided to add some other details to make the concept more mine, which required more reference material.

And how many hours later, I came up with this...

Hope you all enjoyed that. I plan on doing more with the same theme so stay tuned ya'll. Thanks for reading!
